Layer Cake quilt

Layer Cake quilt, originally uploaded by LauraJ_Sews.

I thought this quilt would take me forever to finish, or at least until Wednesday afternoon. Little did I know the power of my new machine. That baby quilted up right fast in two sittings. I slapped on the binding and by noon 30 today I was done. Into the washer and dryer it went and it was delivered to it's new owner after I took some photos.

I finally mustered up the nerve to use my new tripod. It's a big tripod and I was embarassed by it's size. I had a smaller one I purchased last spring but lost the clippy mechanism that attaches to the camera to attach it to the tripod. You follow right? So Anyway I traipsed over to the old school with the tripod, quilt, a plastic lawn chair and the itty bitty camera that looks so silly on the big, big tripid.

Layer Cake quilt back

So I set up the tripod, the chair and the timer on the camera. Run to the chair, grab the quilt and hold it up and wait while the camera snaps away. A few times I was impatient and put my arms down and got snapped in the process. Pretty funny really, I saw people passing by just gawking at the crazy lady standing on chair with a quilt.

So about the quilt: It's a layer cake I had purchased last summer just for the fun of it. I'd never had a layer cake before. It took me this long to figure out what I wanted to do with it. I sketched it out on paper, cut out some Kona solid in some shade of grey for sashing and white for corner stones and I had me a quilt.

Backing Fabric detail

For the back I ran to my favourite place to buy fabric and found some great coordinating prints that would match the front. Even better is finding some of that fabric on sale! Sadly there was just enough for the back of the quilt and just a wee piece left for my stash.

Quilting Detail

For the quilting I chose to do straight line quilting on the diagonal in one direction. It's very effective and I can't wait to do this type of quilting again. It went really well with my new machine. FYI this is the first big quilt I quilt on my machine. I still haven't worked out the kinks with free motion quilting larger quilts but I'll take super fast straight line quilting.

For the binding I chose a thick red/white and thin blue line stripe which compliments everything perfectly.

Layer Cake quilt on a bed

The new owner of the quilt had to see what it looked like on a bed.

I think it's quite fabulous if I do say so myself.
I have another layer cake (City Weekend by Oliver & S) hanging around in my sewing room and I think it's begging me to make something similar. Of course I'll keep that one unless someone loves it more than I do, which happens to be the case more often than not.

Oh how I love this hobby!!

I LOVE it! Even better (for you)is that it went together so fast.
Win-win, I'd say.
And why did you take down the picture of you in your sidebar (though I love that one of the two of you that looks so much like an album cover!)
